Marissa Shipman technically founded theBalm Cosmetics in 2004 but it really began a few years earlier when she bought 11 books on "how to make makeup" and began mixing in her kitchen. Today, the products are no longer made anywhere near her kitchen and you won't find their "recipes" in any book. theBalm boasts a full line of amazing color cosmetics along with a complete set of skincare and 33 nail polishes. The brand is known for its high quality, multipurpose products that are branded with clever, woman-empowering slogans in retro-inspired packaging. All products are cruelty free and made in the USA.

Fruits such as pineapple and papaya work well in at-home preparations, due to their natural enzymes and high sugar content. Strawberry and lemon juices, naturally highly acidic, are favorite add-ons to at-home peels. The most important ingredient is the cane sugar. Caster sugar (finely milled sugar) will produce results closest to those at the dermatologist’s. A superfine grind, caster sugar will dissolve better than regular cane sugar, penetrating skin cells more easily.
Skin Firming Peel
• 1 packet
unflavored gelatin
• Juice of 1 lemon and 1 orange
• Heat together gently to dissolve the gelatin then let cool slightly
The gelatin has a softening effect on the skin and as it dries will help firm and tone while the lemon and orange juice will exfoliate, stimulate and diminish hyper pigmentation.

Gentle Fruit Peel
• 1 cup fresh pineapple
• 1/2 cup fresh papaya
• 1 tablespoon honey
• Puree fruit together then add the honey and mix into a smooth paste
Pineapple and papaya contain natural enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids that remove dead skin cells while the honey moisturizes the skin.
How to do it:
Mash the pineapple and papaya in a food processor and add the honey; mix it well
Spread this mix with your fingertips on you clean face and neck; keep the eye area clear
Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes
Then
wash it off with alternately cold and warm water and end with a splash
